Canyon Walls Series
Earth & Fire Series
“ My belief is that once we, as a people, can connect with our human roots and build a bridge with those who have come before us, we will learn that we don’t live in some isolated, “ high tech “ period of time outside of history. But that instead, we are linked to every human being that has been before us and every human being that will come after us. Then, maybe, we too can learn to take better care of our planet and all its inhabitants as those that have inhabited and coexisted on the earth for eons. “
Jewels From Within Series
These handcast paper wall pieces are made of 85% Abaca paper. Forms are placed in the piece when they are cast to create openings for layers of patinaed and heated metal. Each piece is gessoed and then covered with joint compound to create a textured surface, they are all copper leafed and are painted with acrylic paint. These pieces are contemporary abstract designs and they do not need to be framed.
“ The beauty of aging has also fascinated me, especially in the places we so often overlook: the cracks in old walls and side walks, pieces of rusted metals in the streets and rail yards, or decomposing leaves and vegetation in the wilds. These are the primary influences upon my work. They inspire me, drive me, and feed me. „
Jewels from Within – Medium – Triptych – 24″ x 40″ x 0.75″ $ 2050
These handcast paper wall pieces are made from 85% handcast Abaca paper. Forms are placed in the piece when casting and removed when the piece is dry to create openings or niches for objects to be placed in during construction. Each piece is gessoed and then covered with joint compound to create a textured surface, all are then copper leafed. The figures and prayer bundles inside the openings are made of wood, copper, sticks, wire, beads and bones. These assemblages create a feeling of ancient altar pieces. They can be hung without framing.
“ For as long as I can remember, I have been drawn to earth based cultures, which have a living relationship with all things of the earth and the heavens. For me, their understanding of life and death – that everything is alive; has meaning, a place, a purpose and a time – is essential to reclaim. It is through this reclaiming that I learn to do my part in healing this beautiful, living planet I call home. The idea that for thousands of years humans have used nature’s materials to create objects of art, investing them with sacred meaning, fills my heart and touches my soul. “
Guardian Spirit Protector – Medium – Copper – 24″ x 18″ x 0.75″ – $ 1060
Wall piece made of 95% hand cast abaca paper. When it has dried and is gessoed, I apply a cement mixture, which when dried quickly, will create a beautifully cracked surface. Then I cover the surface with encaustic wax ( bees wax and dry pigment ). This darkens the cracks and makes a smooth blended surface.
“ My work is about witnessing how the passing of time affects the appearance of surfaces in the world around us. I see nature in all Her beauty, and I express this artistically in contemporary ways.“
“ I have worked as a fiber mixed-media artist since the beginning of my career, I am inspired by visits to ancient ruins, colorful rock canyons, and searching for petroglyphs and aged, cracked walls and doors in beautiful old cities such as San Miguel de Allende. My work is seen as ancient, but also contemporary, fitting well into many different environmental settings. „
